South Sudan | Floods update

  • Heavy rainfall and associated floods continue to affect most parts of the country since July, resulting in an increasing number of casualties and damage.
  • According to the United Nations and World Food Programme, at least 700,000 people have been affected across 36 counties, entire villages and crops have been flooded. The worst affected State is Jonglei, where 85,000 people have been displaced and 230,000 affected.
  • Humanitarian organizations are conducting response activities for those most affected.
  • For the next 24 hours, moderate to locally heavy rain is forecast across most parts of the country.

Ecuador – Volcano Eruption (ECHO 30 Sep 2020)

  • The ash fall provoked by the eruption of the Sangay volcano continues to be registered in several areas of the country, being the most affected the Andean province of Chimborazo. A total of 11,198 ha of crops have been destroyed in the provinces of Bolivar, Chimborazo, Guayas and Los Ríos, affecting at least 24,557 farmers.
  • The National Risk Management Service has distributed 26,250 volcano kits to those most affected in the provinces of Bolivar, Chimborazo and Guayas. The Ministry of Agriculture has delivered forage for the cattles.
  • DG ECHO has provided humanitarian funding towards the early action of the Ecuadorian Red Cross through IFRC’s Forecast based Action. This ensured the access to basic health items and livelihood kits to 1,000 vulnerable families.

Indonesia - Landslides (ECHO 29 Sep 2020)

  • Several landslides triggered by heavy rain occurred across Tarakan City (North Kalimantan Province, northern Borneo Island, central Indonesia) on 28 September, resulting in casualties.
  • National authorities report that 11 people died and 3 others were injured in two sub-districts (in North Tarakan and in Central Tarakan.) Landslides damaged at least 19 residential units.
  • Orange alerts for heavy rain with lightning and strong wind have been issued over North Kalimantan Province, starting as of 30 September. Moderate rain is forecast over most of North Kalimantan on 29-30 September.

Vietnam - Severe weather (ECHO 29 Sep 2020)

  • Since 26 September, heavy rain has been affecting northern Vietnam (particularly the Provinces of Phu Tho, Lao Cai, Ha Giang and Yen Bai) causing floods, triggering landslides and leading to casualties and damage.
  • According to media reports, 2 people died following a landslide in Ha Hoa District (Phu Tho Province), 7 people were injured and 3 bridges damaged across the same Province. A total of 73 houses have been affected by heavy rain in the Provinces of Phu Tho and Lao Cai.
  • For the next 24 hours, moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms are forecast over most parts of the country.

Pakistan - Monsoon rains update (ECHO 29 Sep 2020)

  • Since the beginning of mid-June, monsoon rain continues to affect Pakistan, causing foods, flash floods and triggering landslides.
  • According to the national authorities, at least 400 people have died (of which 136 in Sindh Province, 116 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, and 104 in Punjab Province). More than 390 people have been injured and  23,629 persons have been displaced to relief camps in Sindh Province, as of 27 September. Damage was reported to 139,113 houses (partially damaged), 13 roads and 10 bridges, whilst 78,735 houses were fully destroyed.
  • UN’s World Food Programme (WFP)  reported on 23 September, that at least 300,000 people are estimated to be in need of food assistance across 9 districts affected by the flooding in Sindh Province.
  • On 29-30 September, light rain is forecast over northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and drier weather conditions are expected over the rest of Pakistan.
